Day 3
Portland, OR to Hood River, OR (with a stop in Washington)
Miles: 75 mi - ish
Elevation Gain: 3,750 ft
Today’s Ride
What a day! We started with a 10+ mile ride out of Portland, thankful for the city’s bike trail system. Then things got wild — we hopped onto Interstate 205, which actually has a bike lane in between the two directions of traffic. It was surreal riding there on our way into Washington State.
From there, the scenery turned beautiful as we rode through Washington and stopped for lunch along the Columbia River Gorge — a perfect break with an incredible view. After lunch, we crossed back into Oregon on the Bridge of the Gods. It was stunning… and also a little terrifying! 🌉
The afternoon heat was brutal — 99 degrees 🔥🔥🔥 — and somewhere after the bridge I had a little tumble while trying to switch water bottles. No real harm done, just a bruised ego. I’m so thankful for my new friend Karen, who was right there offering support and encouragement.
The day finished with some tough climbing and even five miles of riding on I-84. Not exactly relaxing, but I was grateful for my fellow riders who made it feel a little less scary. Finally, we rolled into Hood River — exhausted, hot, and proud of the miles behind us.
Highlights
🚴 Crossing into Washington on I-205 (crazy but memorable!)
🏞 Lunch along the Columbia River Gorge (Trek does a great job with lunch)
🌉 Riding across the Bridge of the Gods — equal parts beautiful and nerve-wracking
💛 The support of friends new and old on a hot, tough day
This was a big day — blazing heat, and a mix of scary and beautiful roads. I’m exhausted, but grateful: for safe miles, for the camaraderie of this amazing group, and for all the love and support that keeps lifting me up. Tomorrow is an even bigger day, but one day at a time! ! 💗
